The SmartCode WorkshopAndres Duany leads this two-day, immersive program. Birmingham, MI (Metro Detroit) - November 3-4, 2009 Overcoming the limitations of single-use zoning demands tools that are comprehensive and cost-effective. The form-based SmartCode is such a tool. It provides an integrated template for stimulating healthy growth in keeping with community character and for broadening choices for residents and businesses. At the autumn SmartCode Workshop, you can hear context-setting theory from those who invented the Code and get a line-by-line explanation of its key provisions. With technical experts guiding discussions, you can dig deeply into lessons learned and best practices for implementation. Through a variety of interactive sessions with a host of accomplished practitioners, participants are guided page by page through the SmartCode and Modules, exploring the theory, scales and elements of transect planning. Public works standards integrating well-designed places are discussed in detail, along with calibration practices, including the synoptic survey, equivalency tables, and urban design under form-based and transect-based zoning ordinances. Particular focus will be given to SmartCode Modules, including retail, suburban retrofits, sustainability, and complete streets. In-depth sessions address the power of onsite education to influence political persuasion, horizontal infrastructure flash points, administration techniques and legal precedent. Finally, evaluations of actual SmartCode projects follow the adoption process and demonstrates, beyond just theory, the proven best practices behind successful outcomes. The next SmartCode Workshop is in Birmingham, MI. Twenty miles north of downtown Detroit, Birmingham exemplifies the challenges of a modestly sized city operating within a larger metropolitan region. You'll be surrounded by colleagues with similar goals and empowered by the collective wisdom of leading practitioners. The workshop will be held November 3-4, 2009 at: The Townsend Hotel, (248) 642-7900 Reservations@townsendhotel.com, group rate $175 Workshop provides 16 credit hours of APA AICP Certification Maintenance.
